Days In The Park Visits the Villains Victory Party

note:  Sometimes, special events are held at The Park that we just aren't fortunate enough to be able to attend, no matter how much we would like.  Last week's Villains Victory Party was one such event.  Fortunately, we have a lot of friends who can often take advantage of those opportunities and are willing to help us out.  One of our friends from Twitter, Lynnette (@Lynnet_te) was willing to pitch in and write today's article for us.  We think she did a fabulous job and we can't wait to have her back again!

Throughout the month of October, we’ve been asked to vote for our favorite Disney villain on Disneyland’s Halloween web site.   Voters could choose from Captain Hook, Ursula, Cruella DeVille, Jafar, Wicked Queen, or Maleficent and after all of the voting was tallied, the winner would be crowned the most Villainous Villain.  As a frequent reader of the official Disney Parks Blog, I entered their trivia contest to be able to attend the Villains Victory Party held at Disneyland Park.  I was so excited to find out that I was one of 75 readers who answered the questions correctly and got to go!

The party was scheduled for Thursday, October 28 after Disneyland closed from 8:00 until 10:00 pm.   Check-in began at 3:00 and winners were given party credentials and one-day parkhoppers to use prior to the party starting.

As it got closer to 8:00, we headed to Frontierland for the party.  Walking into this western themed area, we were greeted with giant Mickey Mouse pumpkin shaped luminaries, projections of spooky eyes on Bonanza Outfitters and skulls on the walkways.  Cast members positioned at villain stations were giving away masks of each villain, encouraging you to choose the one whose team you wanted to be on. One mask per person, so we decided to each get a different villain. I chose Cruella DeVille.

Meandering towards the Rivers of America, we noticed the beautiful Mark Twain, re-themed for an eerie Haunted Voyage.  Lit by small jack-o-lantern luminary garlands strung across the sides of the ship and piloted by a ghoulish captain, the Twain was boarding passengers for an evening tour around the rivers.  As we began to pass through the turnstiles to board, a janitor named Braeden stopped us. “You don’t want to ride this boat!  Reports say it’s haunted.  You get on that boat, there’s no tellin’ what could happen to you!  There’s Shadowmen out there.  They got Dr. Facilier; they can get you too!” And with that warning fresh on our minds, we stepped through the turnstiles and boarded the riverboat.

We had a few minutes to explore the ship before it launched.  The kids ran up the stairs right away, but I walked around the front of the boat.  The Rivers of America had been engulfed in a thick fog and transformed the upbeat area of New Orleans Square into goosebump- inducing creepiness.  To top it off, the area was filled with music from the villains’ sequence of Fantasmic.  Up on the second level, the lighting of the pumpkin luminaries cast a beautiful orange glow over everything.  I also found a Palm/Tarot card Reader telling passengers’ futures tucked away in the alcove between the stairwells.

As we travelled along, the captain shined a light across the pitch black waters so we could see what was out there.  Then Braedon (have to say this Cast Member was awesome; I wanted to follow him around all night) appeared on the lower deck, telling stories of Shadowmen.  “There they are, look look!!” he shouted and pointed (two fingered of course) to Tom Sawyer’s island.  Sure enough, those Shadowmen were flitting around all over in the dark.  When the light hit them, they ducked away.  More hair-raising spooks appeared throughout the trip and all were pointed out by Braedon. “Oh, no Sheriff Tom!”,  who popped out of the canoes. “Look out, it’s a witch!” as she cackled her way out near the settler’s cabin.  “A Headless Horseman!”, where our usual Indian chief had been turned into the headless rider.  The Indian village was lit in purples and greens and we saw crazy Injun’ Joe trying to scare us away.  And finally, back to dock.  I have to confess that I had a bit of start every time one of those guys jumped out at us.  The trip in the dark was absolutely amazing and surreal.  As we were coming down to disembark, we encountered The Cadaver Dans singing ‘Grim Grinning Ghosts’ on the lower deck.  It was a perfect end to our Haunted Voyage.

We headed towards New Orleans Square and found Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters at a meet and greet. The line was horrendous, so we decided to come back to see them.  Near the Royal Street Veranda, Witch Minnie Mouse and Sorcerer Donald were greeting guests, again with a super long line. Other attractions open during the party included Indiana Jones Adventure, Tarzan’s Treehouse, Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion Holiday.  We thought we’d head down to Haunted Mansion and work our way back to the rest.  Passing French Market, we saw it had been converted to Club Skellington Dance Party for the night.  It’s usually reserved for Halloween party goers only, so it was cool that they included it.  We walked through and saw purple and green disco lights, projections of Zero (Jack’s dog) on the dance floor, rockin’ music, and kids having a ball dancing with cast members.  Jack and Sally had a meet and greet set up next door to the dance party.

Haunted Mansion Holiday is always fun, but entering the elevator with only about a dozen people and being able to take your time walking through the Hall of Portraits was so nice.  We were able to really look over all the changes they made for the season and board our doom-buggy at our own pace.  The ride’s exit brought us to a make-shift doom-buggy scene where we posed for some pictures and pretended to be scared out of our minds.  We headed back towards the main area of the party to see if we could find some more villains.  Pirate Goofy and Chip and Dale came out of nowhere and passed quickly by us but we didn’t get a chance to take pictures; they were speedy-quick!  The meet and greet with the Stepmother and Stepsisters had changed characters.  We were a little bit disappointed because I wanted to get a picture with them, but I couldn’t believe I was seeing the old hag from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.  She was one of the villains I wanted to see the most!  Joining her at this meet and greet were Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Governor Ratcliffe from Pocahontas, and the Queen of Hearts from Alice In Wonderland.  The hag loved the fact that we had the Wicked Queen’s mask and played a game of creepy peek-a-boo with it.  She was really playful and took my son’s Mickey ears off and wore them herself. He loved it, all while the Queen of Hearts attempted to strangle my daughter.  It will be an amazing memory clowning around with these villains.

At this point we only had about 20 minutes left of the scheduled party.   Since we hadn’t ridden it earlier in the day, we thought we’d end this amazing night with a visit to Pirates.  Walking over there, we were told by Cast Members that the “big announcement” would take place at 10.  I had been wondering all night who had actually won the Villains contest, but thought I had missed hearing it!  We rode Pirates, then scooted our way up to the Rivers of America railing for the official crowning getting ready to take place on Tom Sawyer’s Island.

Each of the villains was introduced (well, all but Ursula), and of course they all wanted the crowd’s support.  The Official Campaign Manager of the villains, who emceed the ceremony, read a letter from Ursula explaining her absence, and apparently she had “bigger fish to fry” and couldn’t be bothered to come to such a miniscule affair.  The villains all tried to “out-villain” each other and started a little song and dance number for us with a rousing “We’re evil! Beware! If we don’t get our way there’s evil in the air!” And then, it was finally time to proclaim the most villainous Villain of Them All! “The envelope please.  And the winner is …Maleficent!”  Cue pyro, evil laughing, and the crowd going crazy!  I had voted for Maleficent and was thrilled she won!  After accepting her title, the Rivers of America erupted in a flash of fire and one final overhead explosion.  An absolute standing-ovation worthy ending to such an amazing party.

As the crowd made its way out of the park for the evening, we crawled along behind them not wanting the night to end.  We spent some more time taking pictures of the empty park, marveled at the stores being locked down for the night on Main Street, and finally said our good-bye to Sleeping Beauty Castle before we started towards the gates.  A wonderful time was had by everyone and we were smiling all the way home.

I’m thankful to Disney Parks Blog for allowing us to have this incredible experience.  Disneyland is always magical, but this night I felt that there was a great big handful of pixie dust sent especially for me.

DitP Revisits Big Thunder Ranch For Halloween Time

A few weeks ago, as part of our 'Halloween Time' series of posts, we gave you some pictures of the various Halloween decorations strewn all about Big Thunder Ranch in Frontierland at Disneyland Park.  We honestly figured at the time that would probably be our last venture into that particular area before Halloween was over.  Not because we didn't want to; just other things we wanted to take care of for the blog.

But we recently found out one of our friends (a Cast Member at The Park) works the Petting Zoo, so it was a good opportunity to go back in and check out some of the new pumpkins, and share those with you guys.

So here you go, in what will be our last group of photos of the Disneyland Park pumpkins.

TTFN!
Lucifer stalks Woody, Jessie and Buzz

Not really sure about this one, but it IS colorful

What do you guys think?  Hidden Mickey on the ear?  ºoº

You can see the lady responsible for Chip & Dale behind working on another pumpkin.  Amazing work!

Playing a game of "Where's Minnie?"  The flowers were gorgeous!

And there you have it.  Come back tomorrow when we visit Big Thunder Ranch again for an entirely different reason.

Days In The Park Takes The Happiest Haunts Tour

An Introduction:
For a couple of years here at Days In The Park, we've been dying (pun totally intended) to take Disneyland Resort's Halloween Tour, aptly named the 'Happiest Haunts Tour'.

We'd been hearing about the various tours that were available at The Park, and we had long since decided we wanted this one to be our first, but due to, ahem, monetary issues we just hadn't gotten around to it.  We spent all of the last year talking about it, and as time came near this year, we just didn't think it was going to happen, again.  However, thanks to some serious persuasion on Chad's part, and a loan given to Mark to ensure it happened, October 14th at 5:05pm rolled around with both of us there and accounted for on the tour.

So without further ado...

The Tour:
Offered as one of many different tours at the Disneyland Resort, Disneyland's 'Happiest Haunts Tour' is a roughly 3-hour trek across areas of both Parks (Disneyland and California Adventure) intended to give you a behind the scenes sneak-peek at some of the most "haunted" areas around The Resort, as well as giving you some information on the various stories and Halloween lore these areas around The Park represent.

Unlike many of the tours offered, the Happiest Haunts Tour begins cutting its swathe across The Parks in Disney's California Adventure, next to the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.  We must say, the tour seemed very well organized. Aside from a few technical issues with some equipment (mostly battery malfunction), the setting up and getting under way was as smooth as silk considering there were two different groups (roughly 20 people each) leaving simultaneously.

Our tour guide Adolfo made sure we were all set up with our gear:  headphones (the guides use a closed mic so others around in The Park can't really eavesdrop too much) and flashing "rave" necklaces (so they could keep up with us and we could keep up with our groups, and so we could all blind each other on the dark rides).  Once we were all set (feeling like a bunch of pack-mules I'm sure) our wily guide let us know we would be visiting some "club" at the top of the Tower for further instructions on where our evening would be taking us.  Floundering completely in the dark there, and not knowing what on earth the "club" Adolfo was talking about could possibly be, we foolishly followed our host into the Tower of Terror building, where we were hustled into the waiting service elevators (completely against our wills, I might add), and given the ride of our lives.

The poor girl in the back looks terrified!  *snicker*

Of interesting note, once we arrived back at ground level from the "club", some nefarious Halloween Spirit had taken away our guide Adolfo and replaced him with this guy, Master Gracey.

Over the course of the next three hours, Master Gracey led us on a romp all over the Disneyland Resort, hitting the high spots of the Halloween Time celebration.

In all seriousness, though, Master Gracey (as I'm sure the other guides are taught to do) totally made the tour what it was for us.  He was perfect. Whether he was accusing Mark of hoarding candy corn in his pockets and bringing it into The Parks, or whether he was deadpanning cracks about the children in The Parks "actually being goblins" or "that horrible winter holiday" that "disgusted" him so, the guide really makes the tour on this one, folks.  We couldn't have had a better one.

Master Gracey led us all over The Park:
  1. Main Street, USA
  2. the Jack o' Lanterns in Central Plaza
  3. Tomorrowland and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy
  4. Fantasyland and Snow White's Scary Adventures
  5. Frontierland along with Big Thunder Ranch & Zocalo Ranch and Big Thunder Mountain
And he did so all the while telling tales around the various parts of The Park. We won't give them all away, but some of our favorites included a tale of lost love with the ghost from Ghost Galaxy, a truly terrifying tale of a yeti and his horrible singing voice, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Ichabod Crane,  and the Tommyknockers who inhabit the mines of Big Thunder Mountain.  We also really enjoyed spending some time in Zocalo Ranch in Frontierland, learning more about Dia de los Muertos and other Mexican celebrations.

The Halloween Tree in Frontierland, which Master Gracey hopes one day replaces the "disgusting winter holiday tree" in each of our homes
After your brisk, and it is fairly brisk, walk around Disneyland Park the tour finally ends up just where it should outside of the spookiest locale of all, The Haunted Mansion.  Amazingly enough, at this point our original guide Adolfo reappeared (Master Gracey disappeared without a word or trace) for our final ride of the evening through Haunted Mansion Holiday.  And that's where our tale of the tour ends, and yours begins, should you wish to participate yourself.

Two of the biggest selling points, at least for us, of the whole tour was the fact that you get to see all of the best that Halloween Time has to offer, as well as riding all of the attractions Disneyland is known for during the holiday, all in one shot.  Seriously, who wouldn't want to see all of these places as well as getting basically a front-row pass to these classic Disney Halloween attractions?  You can't help but feel good when you're ushered straight to the front of the line to ride them.

And lastly, though it might seem a bit greedy, we enjoy free things (who doesn't?).  And like so many of the other special things that Disneyland offers, you don't go home from your tour empty-handed.  The rave necklace?  Yours to keep.  The special Happiest Haunts Tour Key on the end of said necklace (which you can only get on the tour)?  Yours to keep.  And they even do your sweet-tooth a tremendous favor with a yummy rice krispy treat shaped like everyone's favorite mouse.

The boy just couldn't resist showing off his goodies

Do you enjoy Halloween?  Good.  Do you enjoy Disneyland?  Great!  Then you owe it to yourself, if you can, to take this tour.  It really does enable you to gain a different, and really neat, perspective of what goes into making Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort what it is.  It comes highly recommended!

If you'd like more information about this, or any of the other Disneyland tours, you can get more information about their full line of tours at the Disneyland website or contact them directly at (714) 781-4400.

Note:
We'd be completely remiss if we didn't give a special mention to that "strange couple" you see in many of our photos.

Through blogging, and our love of Hidden Mickeys, we met Rosemary and Neil from FindingMickey.com and have kept pretty steady contact with them ever since.  When we mentioned to Rosemary we were planning on doing the tour, and on a whim invited them to join us on the same evening, imagine our stupification when they accepted.

One of the awesome things about blogging is making new friends, and in particular new Disney friends.  It was great to spend a few hours getting to know and hang out with them, and we all had a great time doing it.

Be sure to check out their website when you have a minute, and be sure to follow them on Twitter (@findingmickey).

Days In The Parks' "Almost" Wordless Wednesday

Oh, Mr. Ghost Mickey Popcorn Bucket; how we both love and loathe you simultaneously.

When next we meet, you will be ours.  Oh, yes.  You will be ours.

Halloween Time Presents: Main Street, U.S.A.

We're slowly coming to the end of Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort.  As of today, there's less than 2 weeks left!  If you've not been yet, get on up and get out there!  But if you can't go, we hope that the pictures we've put up have done a good job of showing you just what a special time of year it is for us.  We love it!

For our final picture post, we've gone back to the beginning, featuring the first signs of Halloween Time you see when entering Disneyland Park; the many Jack o' Lanterns scattered around Main Street.  Better keep your head on a swivel, because they're everywhere!

City Hall on a clear Fall morning is an awesome site

You never know who might be watching you shop at the Emporium

One of our favorite shops in all of Disneyland -- The Candy Palace!

Tons of little touches adorn the windows along Main Street
Not really Halloween, but we couldn't resist a photo of the Castle

Not sure what it is, but the planters had a decidedly "Mickey" feel about them
And there you have it.  We'll wrap up our series of posts on Halloween Time later this week with our review of Disneyland's Happiest Haunts Tour.  Hope you come back for our finale!
