DITP Top Five: The Greatest (Underrated) Disney Villains

If you've been paying attention to the official Disneyland website at all, and particularly the HalloweenTime portion, you've no doubt noticed that an election for Disney's Greatest Villain is currently taking place.  The list of villains contains:  Maleficent, Jafar, Ursula, Captain Hook, the Evil Queen, and Cruella De Vil.  But that got us thinking; what about the other Disney villains around the park? So our quest to find the Greatest Disney Villains began.

And here are the results!  We proudly present (at least in our minds) the Top Five Greatest (and Underrated) Disney Villains.

Number 5The Coachman from 'Pinocchio'

If you've seen the movie then you know what I'm getting at here.  This dude will go down as one of the greatest kidnappers of all time.  Not only was he able to lure little boys to his faux amusement park (known as Pleasure Island), but he also turned them into donkeys to sell them to a salt mining company (the scene itself still gives us nightmares).  Make sure to lock up your children (or at least teach them right from wrong) when you see this man drawing his carriage down your street!

Number 4Oogie Boogie from 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'.

This guy is rotten to the core (and we mean literally; he's made of bugs).  I mean, he tried to kill Santa Claus.  If that isn't rotten enough for you, how about being an addictive gambler who thinks putting lives on the line (not his of course) is more fun?  If you ever get caught in a conversation with this guy, you better pay attention (now) cause he's the boogie man.

Number 3Judge Doom from 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?'.

Look into my eyes...

What can we say about this devious judge?  He did create a toxic brew known as 'Dip',  capable of killing all of our beloved cartoons and their home of Toon Town.  Oh, and he also set up the always wacky Roger Rabbit for murder and dropped a piano on a man's head; all for the sake of progress and building a freeway (which, as Southern California drivers, we all know is a horrifying thought).  Oh, and although not pictured, his eyeballs can turn into daggers and he has spring-loaded feet.  Proceed with caution.

Number 2The Horned King from 'The Black Cauldron'.

This is one guy I wouldn't want to mess with.  Not only does he rule an army of brutes,  but he also has power over an army of undead soldiers.  And, by our estimation, he is arguably the scariest looking Disney villain out there.  Kind of sad to think that all of that evil potential went into looking for a pig and a cauldron.  Must have had a craving for some bacon stew.
(side note:  It's sad to think that many children might never know what The Black Cauldron is.  This is one of those Disney films that seems to be slowly fading into the forgotten world.  So please, if you haven't shared this film, or watched it yourself,  Disney has just re-released it for its 25th anniversary; go grab a copy and watch it.)

Number 1: Judge Claude Frollo from 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'.

Everything about this guy is menacing.  No-one else we can think of could carry such a thin frame and long black robes, and yet give off such a feeling of impending doom.  If you're so silly as to ask the question, "So what made him your top villain?", we'll be happy to answer for you.  How about the lust he has over the gypsy Esmeralda?  I mean, this guy was so wrenched that he sings a song called Hellfire, in which he describes being bewitched (by the power of the devil gypsy woman) into his lust, and a proclamation that he would gladly accept Hell himself (or send Esmerelda herself there) if his lust isn't quenched.  Oh, and did we forget to mention that just a tad earlier in the film he killed Quasimodo's mother on church property (double sin!).  We could go on all day describing his villainous personality,  but we're assuming you get it by this point.

So there you have it.

But we would also like to take this moment to give out a dishonorable mention (seeing that he's a villain and all).

Dishonorable MentionPete from 'Basically Every Mickey Cartoon'.

Not only was Pete among the first Disney villains, but he is still around today.  Probably causing trouble in the Toon Town district.

Anyone you think we missed?  Any unsung Disney Villain favorites of your own?  Drop us a line and let us know.  We'd love to hear about them!

Judge Doom, is an Awesome Addition to this list. He is one of the fogotten Villians. In Disney MGM Studios (yes, MGM, years ago) on the backstage tour, you could go through the ACME Factory and lay in the steamroller path to get a picture. Always did it screaming in a high pitched voice, like Doom.

Thanks! Glad to see your posting seems to be working today. :)

I remember that MGM Studios from my childhood, man. And I remember the steamroller.

Gotta say, though, off-topic, my favorite part of that was putting on the trench-coat and having my picture taken with Jessica. ;)

i notice your top villains are all male. i don't know if this is some kind of sexual discrimination or whatevers, but it's still a pretty good blog entry. haha love it... great job! ;D

Haha!

You would...

Genuinely, it's not, though. Truth be told, all of the best female villains were already taken by Disney, and since we were trying to think outside of their box, this is the result.

Frollo really is Mark's favorite, while mine is Maleficent. :)

just found your blog and I LOVE it! this entry caught my eye and thought I'd add my 'un-sung villain' pick --the Gogans (not sure the spelling) from Pete's Dragon! nasty, child-abusing family ~ mostly overlooked movie in the park, as well, without the Elliot float from the Main Street Electrical Parade now :(

looking forward to more days in the park fun :) thanks guys--great job with the blog!

Thanks so much, annaliese. We're glad that you found us!

The Gogans are an excellent choice, but like you said, not really in The Park, hence their exclusion. But still, a really good choice.

And we look forward to seeing you around. If you're not already, you can follow us on Twitter @DaysInThePark or on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/Days-In-The-Park/159352407430055 here as well.

Have a magical day! ºoº
