Annual Passholder Opportunity - Splash Mountain 25th Anniversary/Birthday Poster!

If you've spent any time at all with Days in the Park over the course of the past few years, you know we around here love, absolutely LOVE, Splash Mountain!

So when we saw this we just knew we had to share it! We got wind of this last night on Facebook and had time to confirm it this morning so we thought we'd post up so you guys can make use of it and get your own poster celebrating the attraction's 25th birthday.

If you're an Annual Passholder, and aren't blacked out between the 16th (tomorrow) and Friday, you're eligible to receive one of these fantastic looking posters (while supplies last, of course), and you don't even have to ride the attraction to do it! But speaking as someone who once rode it six times straight without leaving our raft, why would you do that?

Distribution will be across from the attraction's exit near Pooh Corner. It would make a great souvenir to add to your collection so get out there, head to Critter Country and get it done! And by all means, comment and let us know if you get one; we'd love to see it!

My Disneyland Trips Aren't Complete Without...

Welcome to those of you joining me from "Disney Babies Blog" and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the 2nd stop on our Magical Blogorail.

I have a confession to make before we even get started. This month we've been charged with coming up with something (attraction, food, show, whatever) that, if left out of our Disney trips, leaves our time in The Parks feeling rather incomplete. For me, there's one little item in particular I feel this way about, and I've written about it before but it's been quite some time since I've done so. So, in the interest of time and getting it out there again, I've decided to redeliver it to you, our loyal readers, in a very slightly altered format. I think it's still good though, and worth a look-see. Phew! Now that that's out of the way...

Everyone seems to have something that they absolutely have to have anytime they are present inside a Disney Park. Fortunately, most people can relate to my article today because in my case, it involves something from the foodservice industry of Disney. For me, no trip inside Disneyland Park (since Disney California Adventure Park doesn't have them) is complete without a classic, the Mint Julep in New Orleans Square.

Typically, people fall into one of two categories when they think of the Mint Juleps at The Park:

1. The "They taste like glorified mouthwash" camp and
2. The "They're the best!" camp

So, originally, I wasn't really sure whether I initially wanted to try the little concoction or not.  But having done so I can proudly say, "They're the best!", with all the enthusiasm I can muster.

So first things first.  What exactly is the Mint Julep in should you so desire one?  The Park describes it as "A refreshing mint drink with a hint of lime flavor", which is actually what made me hesitant to try one in the first place, and is surely why many people fall into the "glorified mouthwash" camp.  I figured the mint would more than overpower the lime in the drink, and thus be exactly like drinking mouthwash.  But after having had several of my own, I tend to think it's more of "A refreshing lime drink with a hint of mint flavor".  In all of the ones I've had, I've never felt the mint was too overpowering; it's always been light and refreshing, which is just what I'm looking for, especially on a hot Southern California day. That said, I know it's probably still not for everyone (different people have different tastes and buds), but if you're on the fence because of the mint, I have to encourage to try it for yourself and see what you think.  It just may surprise you like it did me!

And you can see exactly how it's served up, complete with a lime, lemon, a few mint leaves, lots of ice, and a cherry on top!  Delicious!

Now that you know what the Mint Julep is, I suppose you might be wondering where exactly to go to get one.  Luckily for you, I know the answer!  One place you can find it should you get a hankering for one is Cafe Orleans in New Orleans Square.  If you're going to be eating at that restaurant, it will definitely compliment your meal and with free refills, you can't go wrong.  That said, my favorite place to grab one is at the Mint Julep Bar itself, also in New Orleans Square.  It's located right next to the dining patio for the French Market restaurant.  In fact, if you are taking the Disneyland Railroad from Main Street USA to New Orleans Square, you'll most likely see the bar as soon as you de-board.  It's practically right in front of you across from The Haunted Mansion.  The drink itself will run you only $2.99 (a steal!) and is well worth the money. Sometimes you pay an amount for a drink and feel ripped off a bit, but I've never felt that in this case, and I'll usually order one and either park myself at a nearby table, or wander off into Critter Country, happily sipping away.

Really wanna go nuts?  Feel free to polish it off with an order of Mickey-shaped beignets too and feel those sugar energies soar!  A 3-pack will run you $3.99 and a 6-pack will run you $6.99.  But who doesn't love little fried Mickey heads with confectioner's sugar on top?

And there you have the Julep!  Again, I know that a lot of people probably don't or wouldn't like these little beauties, but if you've never tried one, they come with my highest recommendation and are firmly at the top of the list where it comes to my favorite "In-Park" treats.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue Opening Day!

It seems only fitting that we end our week's worth of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue and "Star Wars" articles with a piece on the very attraction that inspired us to do so in the first place.  We've literally been talking for months now about how excited we were for the new attraction to debut, and it officially opened for the very first time yesterday.  Even though we were lucky enough to have ridden it several times before it was officially opened to the public, we were nonetheless extremely excited to get to The Park and be a part of the insanity of seeing it open to everyone.  We haven't been blogging long now, and we've never been to another attraction's official opening day before, so when you put the two together we just knew we had to be there for this one!

Our plan had originally been to be inside The Park when rope-drop occurred, but we ultimately decided to take it easy in the morning and go into The Park a little bit later than planned.  If you read our "challenge" in our post earlier in the week, you'll remember it was also originally in the plans to basically just "run around the mulberry bush" all day long and ride Star Tours over and over again until we collapsed, either from exhaustion or heart attack.  Well, you know what they say about best-laid plans, but we'll get back to that in a minute.  We wound up getting to The Park around 9:30 in the morning to this...

It might look like it's just a mass of people moving through The Hub near the Partners Statue, but we can assure you it was not.  When we arrived the line began at the back of the statue, wound around in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle a bit, weaved towards Pixie Hollow, back into The Hub, into Tomorrowland and down towards the entrance to Star Tours, back out into The Hub again, along the front of Plaza Inn, past the entrance to Star Tours and back near the Star Trader, back towards and into the overflow room, and finally into the Star Tours building itself.  Sound convoluted enough for you?  Yeah, we though pretty much the same thing.

Several things were already kind of working against us at this point.  First, the attraction wasn't set to open until 10:30 so a long line had already had time to form.  Second, the Fast Pass system for the attraction wasn't in operation yet.  We had kind of counted on that to get us a few extra rides during the day, so we pretty much knew immediately that the number of times we were going to be able to ride were going to be drastically reduced.  But, ever the intrepid adventurers and gluttons for punishment that we are, we jumped into line and prepared to wait.

Amy had made it out to join us by this point so along with her and Chad's son Michael, the waiting commenced.  We wish we could candy coat it and make it sound like it was the most exciting thing we had ever done, but there's really not much to say.  We wound around the area for the next three and half hours before we were finally able to board.  We spent the time tweeting, blogging (some of which you may have read), talking with some people around us, engaging an awesome Cast Member named Sam who was running part of the line at the time, and just enjoying the atmosphere.  Even though we can't really say moving through the line was exciting, the atmosphere was very much so, if that makes sense.  We loved listening to people, chatting it up, and the excitement in the air was palpable.  Even though the line was huge and the wait was long, people were genuinely excited about riding Star Tours for the first time, and it was an awesome experience to be waiting alongside them, excited just like they were.

We didn't get to spend a whole lot of time in the queue taking pictures yesterday (once inside the line moved very quickly), but we did notice a few things we hadn't before.  Rex talked!  Well, sort of.  Since he had been labeled "defective" he kind of stuttered a lot and repeated himself over and over (just like a broken droid would), but it was definitely a nice touch!  We also got a big kick out of the droid in charge of checking the luggage on the left as you move through.  As the luggage moves along the conveyer, he inspects the inside of each piece with an x-ray machine and there's some pretty funny stuff going on in some of those bags.  We won't spoil it for you, but be sure to keep an eye out for it!  And there's a Hidden Mickey in this room as well!  We'll say more about it when our friends from FindingMickey.com have had a chance to see it for themselves, but it's really cool so keep an eye out.

We made it through, got our glasses, watched the pre-flight video and hopped aboard.  Amazing atmosphere in the cabin during that first ride.  People were obviously truly excited to be on board, and there was a ton of clapping, yelling, screaming, and laughing going on.  It was awesome to be a part of it all.  Unfortunately, other than seeing a different "Rebel" on this ride (we saw Admiral Ackbar finally), we didn't get to see any new planets or sequences.  Well, Amy did, but Chad and Mark have been stuck waiting to see Coruscant or Tattooine for a few rides now.  Ah well, another excuse to ride it lots in the future!

Once we were done with that first ride, we had a decision to make, though.  Were we going to see our own "challenge" through and hop right back in line again, or move on to greener pastures?  It was already around 2:30 at the time, and after weighing our options, and given the length of time the line still was (still 2 hours plus), and thinking about how many times we'd really be able to ride the rest of the day, we decided to move on and try to catch it again later in the night.  We talked about it some later and came to the conclusion that with food being a necessity, we really would only have been to ride it one, maybe two more times than we did, so we're pretty happy with the decision that we made.  We moved on to the Tomorrowland station, and railed it on over to New Orleans Square for lunch at Cafe Orleans.  We weren't in line for Star Tours, but we had an awesome time hanging out, enjoying some fantastic grub, and watching 8-year old Michael really put the moves on Amy in some "Kids Meal" competition.

After an awesome lunch, we met up with another friend of ours and hopped into line (it was day all about lines) for a ride on another of our favorite attractions, Splash Mountain.  We hadn't had a chance to ride it yet since it reopened on the 27th, so we waited the hour or so it took (seemed like a drop in the bucket compared to Star Tours) to ride and get soaked.  And we meant, we got soaked.  We've never been so drenched coming off of this ride, ever.  Even when we rode it around 5 times without leaving our boat, we weren't as wet as we got yesterday.  Amy swears (and she used to work at Splash Mountain) that she's never seen a wall of water as big as the one that nailed us yesterday, so we figure that's really saying something.  We remember seeing the water rise up and over Michael's head and just making it way back along the boat.  It was seriously frightening and fun at the same time.  If you get a chance to ride Splash soon, we recommend it big time.  They seem to have ramped the water up to an 11, and it's always a good time!

We're happy to say that we did in fact ride Star Tours just one more time before we went home.  By this point, Amy had had to mosey on but we still had a nice little group going and we decided to ride it one more time.  We hopped back in line and waited another two and half hours to ride it once more.  Saw nothing new this time, either, but had a fantastic time yet again.  There was a huge group of "Star Wars" fans on our final flight of the night that were just loving being on board, and that made it all the more fun.  Plus, riding with friends who had never ridden it before (and their little 4-year old son) made it just that much more special for us.  We left The Park around 10:30 or so, only having ridden twice, but loving every minute of our day out.

So there you have it, the official opening of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue from the Days In The Park view.  The Day didn't really pan out the way that we had originally envisioned, but that's okay!  We had a fantastic time (we really hope that came through), and that makes it all worthwhile.  We're definitely ones that understand the importance of going with the flow while you're in The Park, and not getting stressed out or locking yourself into one thing, so for us the Day went exactly the way it was supposed to.  No regrets, no sense of failure, just an overwhelming sense of "Yeah, that's what it's all about!".

Our Favorite Spots To Shop

Welcome to the first stop aboard Magical Blogorail Blue. Enjoy the ride as we share with you our favorite Disney shopping spots.

When we first began going to The Parks several years ago we definitely had yet to acclimate ourselves to the environment enough to completely enjoy it.  We were the ones who would go from line to line, from attraction to attraction, all day long and then leave at the end of the day absolutely wiped out, because that's how we figured it had to be done.  We've since become Annual Passholders and with that has come a certain amount of understanding in just how to play our time in The Parks to our advantage.  As time has gone one, we've begun to enjoy all of the other things that The Parks have to offer as well, including restaurants and shopping spots.

We honestly enjoy shopping now in The Parks, even though as men, this probably puts us in some kind of minority.  We even have our favorite places to shop, which we're going to share with you today!  One of the reasons we enjoy shopping in The Parks is because there is always something to see.  It's true, you can find the same merchandise in any number of shops around, but we enjoy the way that they gear each shop towards the land that it is in and much of the merchandise the same.  And it seems like there is always something we've not noticed before every time we go in a particular shop, such as window-dressings or displays.  We talk a lot around here about the "little details", and Park shopping is certainly no different, so come along with us for some of our favorite shopping haunts inside The Resort.

Westward Ho (Frontierland)

The Westward Ho Trading Co. - Pins and Vinyl galore!

One of our favorite places in The Park to hang out is Frontierland, so it's probably only natural that one of our favorite places to shop is there as well. We love the pioneer and western feel of the area, and Westward Ho is perfectly themed to fit in. Set on the end of a western boardwalk (picture a saloon with hitching rails outside, complete with a cigar store Indian), rarely a visit to The Park goes by where we don't stop in at least once. It's specialty? Disney Pins and Vinylmation! When we go shopping for Vinylmation (when we're in the heat of a collection), this is usually our first stop. In our experience, it offers the best selections of Pins in The Park, and there are trading tables outside if that tickles your fancy. Or, if you're like us and deal in plastic, there are also trading boxes inside you can use. We've always found the Cast Members in Westward Ho pleasant and fun to deal with as well. They've always been great to deal and interact with, and definitely go a long way towards making Westward Ho one of our favorite stops.

Pooh's Corner (Critter Country)

We've almost begun thinking of Pooh Corner as a hidden treasure! Set way back in The Park at the back end of Critter Country, the Corner (as we've taken to calling it) has become one of our weekly stops while we're roaming around late at night. We love the Critter area, and this shop fits in perfectly with all of the other decor and features around. Pooh Corner itself is an awesome shop for souvenirs for the kiddies! There are several rooms stretched out together here (the shop is really quite large) with all kinds of clothing, toys, and everything else your kids would typically be screaming for. Good stuff!

Being who we are, though, our reason for coming back here is totally different. We like the treats! We've talked to many people, many of whom don't even know, that there is in fact a candy shop in Pooh Corner. We kind of think of it as a miniature Main Street Candy Palace (from Main Street, USA). We love going into the shop and watching them hand-make all of our favorite treats. And what's better than watching them make them? Eating them, of course! Many an evening will find us at the counter ordering either a Peanut Butter Sandwich (or Heaven) and a carton of milk for dessert. Or, if you have peanut allergies, there are TONS of other options as well, such as toffees and candy apples. Plus, there is a wide assortment of other candies here such as the Disney brand of Jelly Belly candies (which take up an entire wall along the back) and pretty much any Goofy's Candy Co. candies you can think of (including our beloved Sour Balls). Not sold yet? We honestly don't know what else could say to convince you then. Moving on!

D-Street (Downtown Disney)

Lastly, we need to visit what we've dubbed the King of Vinylmation stores at The Resort, D Street. Located in the hip and trendy Downtown Disney area, D Street is also a place we typically stop at at least once a trip out. If a new Vinylmation series is coming out, this is your place to get it! They get all of the new releases as soon as they come out, and many an hour we've spent in here just checking things out and wishing we had the money to buy every piece of Vinyl in sight. There is also always a trading box in here (and usually people outside willing to trade as well), so if you are looking for that special piece for your collection, this just might be your place to find it.

As strange as it is to say, since that's mostly what we are there for, D Street isn't only about the Vinylmation. It is in Downtown Disney after all, and there are tons of other cool and kitschy items here. Lots of Star Wars and other sci-fi items are in here, and there are tons of t-shirts, posters, toys and other things here to keep even in the most discerning geek happy. Definitely worth checking out!

The Sound of (Park) Music

Let the music begin

Have you ever entered the Park and just stood in awe at how detailed it is? From the Cast Members' costumes to the buildings surrounding you, everything is planned to fit together.  Even the background music fits in perfectly.  Just one of the many surprises that the Park has in store for you.

Almost every time we head over to the Park, we listen to Disneyland Resort Discography.  It hit me the other day that some of the songs on the CD I wasn't readily familiar with, and there were plenty of songs playing in the Park that weren't on our CDs.  So where did they come from?  Well, we found the solution (it wasn't hard to find, but it still made us feel good about ourselves) while making our way through the famous entrance tunnels into Main Street, U.S.A.  We heard some very familiar sounds from the CD, and it hit us, there's always more to the Park than meets the eye (quite literally sometimes).

We love hearing the song "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" from Hello, Dolly! (and Wall-E, of course) playing in the background throughout Main Street.  Making our way down to the castle and into Fantasyland, the tone of the music changes entirely.  King Arthur Carousel might as well be one giant calliope boom box.  You can hear famous Disney Princess music played, such as "Once Upon A Dream" from Sleeping Beauty (and many others) as it goes around and around.  Even heading towards the Matterhorn you can hear music coming from the Mad Tea Party; Alice In Wonderland tinged, of course.

Since we're heading towards the Matterhorn, let's keep going into Tomorrowland, where the sounds of space and science fiction movies can be heard.  They love music so much here they even have a stage for it where bands can be seen and heard on any given weekend.  While we're here, let's grab a Rocket Rod (couldn't resist) and shoot on over to the other side of the Park.

Where John Williams and Rock-a-billy collide

"How Do Ya Do?" can be heard over at Critter Country, evoking images of Brer Rabbit and his laughing place (and giving us an insane desire to climb on that blasted Splash Mountain just one more time), along with the many tunes of Winnie the Pooh ("Heffalumps and Woozles," anyone?) coming in every once in a while.  As you make your way down to New Orleans Square, you'll notice some of that 'good ole Jazz' music being played to set the mood while you stroll through the shops; it just makes you want to snap your fingers!

What about one of the wildest portions of the Park, Adventureland?  Music from the infamous Tarzan's Treehouse (infamous to us; let's not get into that tree too much, our legs hurt just thinking about it), Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye, and the "Garden Show" from The Enchanted Tiki Room all vie for space inside your eardrums.

Let's take a detour and say, "Howdy!" to Frontierland.  Classic western music is, of course, the theme here, and every once in a while you may get a real treat and hear the theme song from Blazing Saddles, as well as music from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and from The Golden Horseshoe Revue.  Had enough?  Head on around the "wildest ride in the wilderness" and you'll find yourself on your way back to Fantasyland; we've already been here so just keep going until you hit Mickey's Toontown, where the many whacky and zany sounds of Disney cartoons like Steamboat Willie and Roger Rabbit's Cartoon Spin can be heard all around.

We've said before (this week in fact!) that's it all in the little details, but we love our Park music and sounds.  We can't help but smile when our cell phones go off in the Park (featuring Park ringtones, of course) and we see people looking around to see where the sound is coming from.  We're so infatuated with the sounds of the Park even our phones play Park tunes! 

Sometimes we get so caught up in the visual magic of the Park that we let the audible kind pass us by.  So, the next time you're visiting, take a minute to close your eyes and give a listen.  We didn't list every 'Sound Hot Spot' because we want you to find some of the Park magic for yourself. You never know what you might discover.

Great Moments In Our History: Splash Mountain Redux

Last week, we introduced you to one of our favorite pastimes while we're hanging in either of The Parks.

We won't go over the entire thread again (you can click and read if you haven't already) but to put it short and sweet, we enjoy setting personal "records" while we're at The Park.  We like to see how many times we can ride a certain attraction in one day or how many consecutive trips into The Park we can ride the same attraction; things like that.

As of last week, one of our favorites involved Splash Mountain.  Up until this point, our high-water mark (punnage!) on this particular attraction was our riding it three times, consecutively, without ever having left our raft.  But we were determined to break that mark this past weekend.

In fact, if you'll recall (and read last week's post) we had grand designs of blogging while we were actually on the ride, as well as breaking our own record.  We suppose 1 out of 2 isn't bad.  The whole blogging thing didn't really work out.  Guess a DROID with a dead battery will do that.

But just as we had planned we wandered over into Critter Country around 8:45, around 15 minutes before we knew that Fantasmic! would be starting.  Unforeseen, but completely welcome, was the addition of three other friends from Twitter to our party:  Julie, Jenna and Destiny.  The pressure was palpable.  Not only did we have to beat the record for ourselves, and our blog, but we couldn't be seen with egg on our faces in front of our new friends.  It was on, Br'er Rabbit.

We'll spare you all the gory details, but it should be sufficient enough to say that five spins around the mountain later our record was completely smashed.  By this point (thankfully!) the lines were finally forming again and we had to jettison our boat.

Our record-breaking extravaganza wasn't without peril and consequence, though.  Deciding it would be best to man up and protect the women from the impending flood of water, we sat in the front of the boat.  We don't think we've ever been so wet in our entire lives.  If we had jumped into the Rivers of America fully clothed we couldn't possibly have been that wet.  We got off the attraction with our tuckus completely numb, our ears ringing (primarily from Destiny screaming the entire time), and weighing a full 100 lbs. heavier than we were when we got on.

But we all agreed (as we wrung the water out of our hoodies, poured the water out of our shoes, and cinched our belts tighter so our pants wouldn't fall off because they were so weighed down with water) that we had a blast.  We would have to think there's not many others who have done what we did.  If there are, our hats are off to you.  As it stands, though, we think we've done all we can take for right now.  The wetness must come to an end, and we are still in the process of drying off.

But like the Splash Mountain shirt says (only $19.95!), "It Was Soaking Awesome!".
